From 1956, the German Federal Railway put the E 10 series locomotives into service for heavy express and fast trains on main lines. The machines reached a top speed of 150 km/h and had an output of 3,260 kW. During the course of production (from E 10 216), the large individual lamps were replaced by two smaller lamps (one as a headlight, one as a tail light); this version was designated E 10.2 according to the serial numbers.
