From 1955, the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR developed the V 60 diesel-hydraulic locomotive for medium-duty shunting service. Above all, these machines were intended to put an end to the less than rational use of steam locomotives in shunting service. From 1962 to 1964, the first series of 163 locomotives was delivered to the DR by LKM Babelsberg. During the construction of the first main series, a rain protection roof was installed over the side windows. Due to new service regulations, DR shunting locomotives were gradually given an orange-yellow paint finish in the course of revisions.
