The ESU 50718 is a digital LED interior lighting set designed for N, TT, and H0 scale passenger coaches, featuring 13 warm white LEDs on a board measuring 264mm in length and 9mm in width. The hardware is divided into a 74mm base section containing the integrated decoder and four LEDs, followed by eight segments spaced at 24mm intervals and two detachable 4.5mm sections for entry-way illumination. This modular design allows the strip to be shortened to match specific coach lengths. To ensure consistent operation, the board includes a built-in buffer capacitor and an interface for the optional 50710 PowerPack supercapacitor. Brightness is regulated via a constant voltage supply and can be adjusted through an onboard potentiometer or software configuration variables (CV).

The integrated decoder is based on the LokPilot 5 Basic architecture, supporting DCC, Motorola, and analog AC/DC operating modes with RailComPlus functionality for automatic command station registration. The 13 LEDs are categorized into seven independently addressable groups, including two entrance lights and a pre-soldered directional red tail light. Logic control allows for prototypical lighting effects such as neon tube simulation, flickering starters, battery-powered emergency lighting, and soft dimming. Further expansion is possible via one amplified output and two auxiliary LED outputs, intended for specialized lighting like cab signals or lavatory illumination, all manageable through ESU V5 Function Mapping.
